| Unsightly
leg veins are a problem for millions of people. Contributing
factors are family history, aging, pregnancy, prolonged standing,
and trauma. Varicose veins are enlarged vessels that have widened
as a result of weakness in the vein wall, which stretches and
bulges. Spider veins are small superficial purple or red veins
stretching like a web under the skin. |

What methods does Dr.
Phillips use?
Sclerotherapy:
This is the most traditional method. Small amounts of detergent
solution are injected into veins to disrupt and breakdown the vein
wall. The area is then compressed for several days. The vein is
reabsorbed by the body over 2-3 months. This procedure is virtually
painless. High impact activities like running and aerobics should
be avoided for 2 weeks. The patient must wear elastic stocking for
2 weeks after the injections for the best results.
Laser
therapy: The small spot of laser light travels through the skin
and is absorbed by the blood within the vein. The resulting heat
clots the blood and destroys the vein. The surrounding tissues are
unaffected. Over time the vein will be absorbed by the body and
disappear. This method can be very effective for large veins. The
laser produces a rubber band snapping sensation. Chilled gel and
local anesthetics prevent discomfort. No elastic stockings or change
in daily activities is necessary. Laser therapy should not be performed
on tanned skin.
Intense Pulsed
Light: A high intensity light is used instead of a laser. The
light energy is absorbed and the vein is destroyed similar to laser
treatments. This is an excellent method for tiny spider veins. It
also is use to eliminate any discolorations from Sclerotherapy and
laser therapy.
How many treatments are
needed?
Large vessels
require multiple treatments over a few months. Small veins and spider
veins often require only a single treatment.
What are the common Side
effects?
Slight redness
and minimal discomfort are often noted immediately after treatments.
A cold compress and Tylenol are usually more than adequate relief.
After the body absorbs the damaged vein, a slight brownish discoloration
can sometimes occur. This can be treated with intense pulsed light
yielding an excellent cosmetic result.
