How
does the laser work?
The laser produces
a beam
of highly concentrated light
that passes safely through
the skin to the hair follicle. The
laser energy then selectively
heats and destroys the hair
follicle without harming the
surrounding skin.
Does it hurt?
Laser treatments
may cause a slight tingling sensation. Cool gel and cold air
are used to protect the skin and provide comfort. Because some areas
of the
body are more sensitive than others, topical anesthesia is always
available.
There is no discomfort following the treatments and normal activities
can be
resumed immediately.
How many treatments are
needed?
Hair grows in
cycles; some are actively growing while others remain in a dormant
phase. The laser eliminates only hair follicles in the active growth
phase. Approximately four weeks later, additional hair follicles
enter the growth phase. Usually four sessions, four weeks apart,
are necessary before all the hairs can
be treated.
What area can be treated?
Essentially
any area with unwanted hair can be treated. In women, the most popular
areas include the lip, chin, bikini, and underarm areas. In men,
the most popular
areas include the back, neck, ear, and chest areas.
Are the treatments safe?
The Cynosure
laser is FDA approved for hair removal. Treatments are non-invasive
and very safe. Rarely, some redness or discoloration of the skin
occurs, which
resolves completely.
